I think our favourite way to travel at this moment is by car. We love road trips! Especially with kids it is hands down the easiest and most flexible travel form, and here in the US, probably the most popular too. Distances here are long, but there are often things to see along the way. We like to take our time while driving so we can stop and visit some historical old towns, natural wonders or to eat well and taste some wine. One can also stop when ever needed, and with kids you really need some extra breaks.
Also on our trips to Finland we have been on road trips even though we have to fly over there first. It is much easier to visit Finnish Lapland or friends' summer houses by car. For some reason I have started to be a little bit of afraid of flying lately, even though driving is definitely not any safer. But somehow while driving you feel like you have more control of things. For next summer's trip to Finland we are hoping to drive at least to Turku, and maybe do a road trip to Norway or Estonia. Hopefully we are able to do a bigger road trip in Europe in the upcoming years.
While driving you will see all kinds of things. We often choose a smaller road with more to see than the fastest one. Or at least we try to find another route to come back home. Often we just drive as far as we have time and then find a hotel to stay at. Sometimes we book hotels beforehand, but that makes the schedule more restrictive. The best road trips usually are the ones where you can change the plan at any time if it's needed, and you are not in a rush.
We like all forms of travel, but I think at the moment we like road trips the most. I do dream about a Caribbean cruise though and would like to see those huge cruise liners. I think we would love it, especially now that our kids are still small.
